Results with a Temporary Balloon Buckle for the Repair of Retinal Detachment

Abstract
Twenty patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment without traction were treated with temporary ballon buckles. The balloon was inserted into the parabulbar space. The balloons were deflated and withdrawn after seven to fourteen days. All patients were fol-lowed for at least 6 months. Permanent attachment depended on cryo- or laser-induced adhesions rounds the break.
The procedure was initially successful in 17 patients. Two retinas remained detached after the balloon was inserted and required a more permanent buckle. One retina required reinsertion of balloon due to spontaneous deflation of balloon. We suggest that intraorbital ballooning is a good choice of primary procudure for the retinal detachment with retinal breaks which were located superior portion of the retina, because this is simple and inex-pensive than the routine scleral buckling procedure with silicone sponge.
